Private Architectural Project
A single storey extension to both front and rear to create three extra rooms; dining room, entrance lobby, cloakroom, and take bedrooms away from the main living area. Also, extra car parking was required to allow either of the owners' two cars to leave without having to move the other one.
As the property is in an exposed and prominent location at the top of a hill, elements such as the covered entrance were suggested for aesthetics, comfort and safety.
As this property is on a pronounced slope, careful consideration had to be taken in construction techniques to create split level spaces that were intuitive and user friendly.
Re-landscaping the lower part of the front lawn and constructing a retaining wall created an easy and efficient parking area, which allowed us to maintain a flat front lawn area and the front boundary wall keeping the enclosed, yet spacious, feel to the property. Widening the entrance to the drive was a must as entry/exit for the cars was clearly important.
The dining room created to the rear of the property was built over half of the existing patio trying to take as little of the back garden as possible. A small retaining wall with sunken steps was used to maximise space and allow easy access to the rear of the property and out buildings. As this room would now have great views of the garden with lots of afternoon and evening sun, French doors and large aspect windows were incorporated into the design.
